Northern African Spotted Hyaena
Spotted hyenas, often unfairly viewed with contempt, are formidable predators that dominate the African savanna. These skilled hunters utilize a unique strategy, relying on their exceptional stamina to pursue prey over long distances. They weaken their target through relentless biting and harassment, eventually overwhelming it. While they may resemble dogs in appearance, spotted hyenas are actually more closely related to cats. Their robust build, powerful jaws, and non-retractable claws are perfectly adapted for running, quick turns, and bringing down prey. The savanna echoes with their diverse vocalizations, a chorus of groans, giggles, yells, growls, laughs, and whines that easily identifies their presence. These remarkable creatures play a vital role in the delicate balance of the Maasai Mara grasslands’ ecosystem.
