Masai Mara conservancy Kenya

Big ugly crocodiles are lurking in the waters of the Mara river and the wildebeests are swimming for their life to get to the other river bank before being spotted by the big monsters.

Marabou storks and vultures feeding on a massive amount of Wildebeests that have drowned during the annual migration. The free lunch do exist as these Marabou storks and vultures dig into the carcasses of Wildebeests lying dead on the edge of the Mara river.

The hippos normally only graze at night, in the daytime they rest or frolic in the water to cool their massive trunks. Sometimes the hippo pools smells rather nasty from all the hippo excrements, it looks like they don’t mind at all.

Could look like some prehistoric monster crocodiles resting in the sun on a river bank in the Masai Mara. Enormous and fat these crocodiles live on a steady diet of wildebeest and Zebra.

“Early morning on the grasslands, three hungry lions prowl their territory. The air is still cool, and the time has come to hunt. They search for young, vulnerable herbivores—easy prey for a coordinated attack. Typically, these victims are inexperienced, slower, or confused animals that haven’t yet learned to recognize the threat of an approaching pride.”

The sun nearly going down behind the horizon and a small herd of Wildebeest decided to cross the strong current of the Mara river.

Water was splashing everywhere as the large hippo’s jumped into the Mara river on this late afternoon.

Everywhere you look they are there, thousand of wildebeest grazing and slowly building up to pass the Mara river during the great migration.

Wildebeest are nervous animals and they will start moving the moment they sense any danger.

“An enormous crocodile kills a juvenile wildebeest in the Mara River by crushing its head in its powerful jaws. The young wildebeest was crossing the river as part of the annual migration, having become slightly separated from its mother while swimming to the other side. From the riverbank, the massive crocodile sprang into action, swimming swiftly to the middle of the river before seizing the wildebeest. Loud cries erupted from the struggling animal, but after five minutes, the fight came to an end as the crocodile dragged its lifeless prey down the river.”

After a heavy late afternoon rainfall the sun was was quickly disappearing and giving the horizon a warm glow.  Two wet Grant gazelles was grazing in the tall grass with their fur still moist.

One lonely acacia tree in the middle of the grass lands of the Masai Mara on a chilly morning. There a some spectacular views to be seen on early mornings when the mist have just evaporated and the sun is raising above the horizon.

A lioness resting on a small hill on a cold and moist morning in the Masai Mara game reserve. Very early in the day with the dew only partly evaporated a proud lioness was relaxing on a small hill just outside a scanty collection of trees.

While driving around the Mara river on a early morning a pretty Lilac-breasted Roller was sitting on top of a bush looking for a tasty meal of maybe some insects, scorpions, snails or a meaty lizards. The Lilac-breasted Roller is quite a common bird but still the colors of the feathers still makes it quite a spectacular sight on the open savanna.
