Closeup of the retreating Rebmann glacier that once were a part of the massive ice cap that covered the Kilimanjaro before the industrial revolution.
Due to elevation a large belt of Kilimanjaro has plenty of rainfall and incredible dense rain forest.
After reaching the Uhuru peak we did a survey of the ice fields and the Rebmann glacier. It was a beautiful clear morning and the strong winds had died down for a serene walk around the Glaciers.
Near the peak of Kilimanjaro a beautiful sight of the Rebmann Glacier and Mount Meru with the sun slowly illuminating the sky.
On a very cold March morning I reached Uhuru Peak and the southern ice fields with my friend Sergei. Our water bottles had frozen solid and we had to break one to eat some ice. The night ascend had been extremely cold with temperatures in the minus 10-20 range with high winds near the peak.
The southern ice fields as seen from Karanga camp on Kilimanjaro. One day and one night away from the peak.
The first sunlight hitting the frozen peak of Kilimanjaro while strong winds pushes clouds bathed in warm sunlight over the rim. Beautiful sight on a freezing morning.
During the night a lightning storm raged and when we came out of our tents that early morning the mountain had completely transformed, now covered in white snow all the way for the alpine range. A beautiful sight, all glittering in the soft morning sun.
We started climbing Kilimanjaro at 23:00 in the night, the sky was completely clear with the Milky Way fully visible. In clear nights like this the temperature drops very quickly as the cold from the universe has no barriers to pass. Our water bottles frozen solid within two hours and the temperature must have been in the minus 10-20 range.
