Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park features underground springs that feed its lakes, swamps, and wetlands, creating a true oasis for elephants and many other animals that forage on the lush grasses. The sun barely up on the horizon, casting a hazy light across the savanna. A cheetah, its spotted coat blending seamlessly with the golden, dry grass, moves with fluid grace. It is nearly a ghost in the tall grasses, unseen by the unsuspecting herd of gazelles grazing in the distance. Sooner or later depending on the predator’s patience, a potential chase will emerge and then the promise of a kill might happen.

Amboseli National Park is renowned for its large elephant herds, drawn to the life-giving swamps fed by the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. However, the park teems with a rich diversity of wildlife beyond elephants. Here, a vast herd of zebras gracefully traverses the savanna, passing by an ancient, imposing acacia tree.

Elephants are some of the most majestic creatures on earth. They are also some of the most endangered. Amboseli National Park in Kenya is home to one of the largest populations of elephants in Africa. These animals have been studied for years by scientists who are trying to learn more about their behavior and how to protect them.
The elephants in Amboseli are used to people and vehicles being around them. They often walk right up to the cars and trucks, sometimes even putting their trunk inside to get a better look. This close interaction with humans has led to some amazing photos and videos over the years.

Sadly, the elephant population in Amboseli is declining. There are many reasons for this, including poaching and habitat loss. Scientists are working hard to find ways to protect these animals, but it is going to be a difficult task.

The late afternoon sun casts a warm glow over the elephants as they wander through the Amboseli swamp. The mother and baby are close to each other. The baby looks up at its mother, its trunk wrinkled from the humidity. The elephant herd is large, with adults and youngsters of all ages. They move slowly through the green grass in the swamp, their trunks outstretched, feeling for food.

On a afternoon with golden light we find this female lion resting near some small hills. It looks like she have been in many a fight as the face is scared a number of places.

White Egrets is a common follower of the elephant herds roaming on the grass plains of Africa. There is always free meals in the insects that are disturbed by the heavy elephants.
